TV Magazine Scans
Here in the United Kingdom, the series was originally broadcast on ITV, debuting on Friday 22nd July 1983. Unlike nowadays, where TV listings appear in single magazines, ITV programmes were solely printed in the TV Times (BBC programmes were in the Radio Times). Here are some scans and features from the original broadcasts. To note is, that like many imported US series of the era, the episodes were shown in quite a different order from the original US broadcasts. Using these scans, my aim is in time to assemble a guide to the original UK broadcast order. More coming soon!
All scans are from the TV Times (unless otherwise stated). Even on it's initial run, each region took it's own episode, making forming any sort of U.K. broadcast pattern VERY difficult to follow!
FRI 22nd July 1983 - Pilot Taken from the Thames / LWT edition.
FRI 29th July 1983 - Black Day At Bad Rock Taken from the Anglia edition. Yes, illustrating how much of a different order the UK broadcasts were in, the first regular episode broadcast after the Pilot was 'Black Day At Bad Rock'! Some regions took these early episodes at 9 pm, others earlier at 7:30 pm (typically with a repeat of 'Minder' in place of the 9 pm slot).
FRI 5th August 1983 - Children Of Jamestown Taken from the Anglia edition. The first episode after the Pilot broadcast in the US, this was the first UK airing of this episode that was seldom repeated by ITV, presumably because they didn't like the storyline about a religious cult.
Fri 12th August 1983 - A Smal And Deadly War Taken from the Granada edition.
Fri 19th August 1983 - Holiday In The Hills Taken from the Central edition. Another seldom repeated episode (in Southern regions at least).
Fri 28th October 1983 - RECIPE FOR HEAVY BREAD Taken from the Central edition.
Fri 20th January 1984 - LABOR PAINS Taken from the Thames/LWT edition.
Fri 10th February 1984 - In Plane Sight Taken from the Thames/LWT edition.
Fri 24th February 1984 - The Battle Of Bel-Air Taken from the Central edition. By now, the standard broadcast time was 7:30pm, but some regions, such as here, started earlier, at 7 pm. I also have a Granada edition which has the same details. This was the last episode shown in ITV's initial run of the series. When it returned, it would be on Saturdays, where it stayed for (most of it's) remainder ITV network run.
MORE SCANS COMING VERY SOON!
UK fans - Do you have any old recordings of episodes either from regional variations (bar 1990s LWT, which I already have, and later TVS/Meridian), or better still, recordings of original network ITV broadcasts, to either donate or loan? If you do, please contact me here!
